Tres Pescados Slam Tournament Casting Competition
Fly Casting Competition Entry: Watch as the tournament guests and the island's
top fly casters compete for the prize and the bragging rights as the 2010 Belize Fly Casting Champion. There are 2 divisions for the
casting contest; distance
and accuracy and 3 categories; youth, women's and men's, in each division. The contestant's score in each division will be combined to
determine the over all winner. See the "Rules" page for the official competition rules.
The competition is open to all over the age of 10 and is divided into 3 categories: Youth, Women, and Men. The Youth category allows all youth between the age of 10-15
to compete. Please note that the age restriction for the youth category is to limit the possibility of broken tournament provided rods/gear. Women and Men's categories
are open to men and women 16 years old and over. There is no entry fee required to compete.
Fly Casting Competition Course: The course for the casting competition will consist of a 100 foot by 8 foot casting lane
and a caster's platform (see illustration at right). The distance and accuracy casting events will be held on this same course. The lane will have a 100 foot tape measure on each side
and during the competition two (2) spotters will be located down-lane to spot each cast's landing position. The caster's platform will be a raised platform located in the center of the lane
allowing the caster to cast to either end of the course. The course is scheduled to be located on Barrier Reef Drive (Front Street) in front of Central Park.
Fly Casting Competition Equipment/gear: The tournament will provide the rod/reel/line setup and all
contestants will use this same setup. The provided setup will consist of an 8 wt, 9-0 foot, fast action fly rod with a large arbor reel filled with a new standard
saltwater 8 wt, weight forward, floating fly line and dacron backing. The setup will include a 9 foot standard built-up leader and terminated with a piece of yarn or other
light weight material.
Fly Casting Distance and Accuracy Competition: There will be two (2) fly casting divisions; one (1) for distance and one (1) for accuracy.
The farthest cast wins in the distance division. The highest score from landing casts in the target rings at 20, 40, 60 and 80 feet wins in the accuracy division.
Each caster will use the same 8 wit rod, reel, fly line, leader and tippet. The tippet will be terminated with a piece of yarn.
Distance casting division scoring:
Casts will be measured to the nearest inch and rounded down
Each inch of distance shall equal one (1) point
Only the farthest cast of the 3 attempts will be counted
No points will be given for a cast landing outside of the casting lane
If a cast lands in any portion of the forward section of the casting lane it counts as one of your casts
To avoid an uncontrollable cast from hitting the forward section of the casting lane and counting as 1 of your casts, the
caster can drop the cast on the backcast onto the back section of the casting lane and restart the cast without
penalty.
Accuracy casting division scoring:
Casts will be scored at four (4) distances
Distance one (1) is a cast landing inside the ring at 20 feet and equals 20 points
Distance two (2) is a cast landing inside the ring at 40 feet and equals 40 points
Distance three (3) is a cast landing inside the ring at 60 feet and equals 60 points
Distance four (4) is a cast landing inside the ring at 80 feet and equals 80 points
One warmup cast is allowed. Three (3) cast shall be made at any of the four (4) target rings
Total points will be the combined total of all three casts
No points will be given for a cast (yarn/fly) landing outside of the target ring
If a cast lands in any portion of the forward section of the casting lane it counts as one of your casts
To avoid an uncontrollable cast from hitting the forward section of the casting lane and counting as 1 of your casts, the
caster can drop the cast on the backcast onto the back section of the casting lane and restart the cast without
penalty.
Combined points from the distance casts and the accuracy cast divisions will determine the overall casting competition winner.
Competitors are not required to compete in both divisions but the chances are better in becoming the overall winner by
competing in both divisions.
BACK!Mini Fly Rod Casting Competition:
The new mini-fly casting competition is returning to the Tres Pescados tournament. With stiff, fast action these Mini Fly Rods will test the compeitor's skill at casting these
27 inch fly rods, yes you read it right, 27 inch. Divisions will include youth, women and men. See the "Rules" page for the competition details.
